                   Prof. Lorenzo Robbiano: What do polynomial equations really represent?

                            The main purpose of the talk is to illustrate some situations where polynomial equations arise naturally, but a considerable dose of human intelligence is necessary to make genuinely good use of them.  In particular, I will consider the following three cases:
 - Automatic theorem proving;
 - Physical laws extracted from experimental data;
 - Border basis schemes.
